  Prologue

The students file into class a few at a time as I sit at my desk, watching. They’re all the usual type; stuffed suits and snobs that have all the book smarts but none of the street smarts. You gotta have both if you want to make it in this business. You have to be able to point out when someone is playing the system. I tap my pen on the desk as they all take their seats.

Until she walks in the door.

A perky blonde with a great rack, fantastic ass and a banging body. Her long blonde hair is pulled back in a sensible pony tale and she’s wearing glasses. She’s wearing tight black jeans and a red and black shirt. I watch as she walks down the first row of seats and sits at a desk in the back away from everyone else. A loner. She’s perfect. I stand, introducing myself to the class but my eyes never leave her. She peeks up at me from under her lashes, a small smile on her lips. I have the students go one at a time, introducing themselves and telling us what their major is. I couldn’t really give a shit about any of them, I just want to know about her. Finally, it’s her turn to speak.

“Hi… I’m Halle Reid and I’m in my final year to get my degree.”

Her voice is sweet. Innocent. And I’m about to fuck up her whole world.

  Chapter One

  Halle

My alarm telling me it’s time to leave for class is screaming at me from my phone as I scramble to finish getting dressed. I don’t know how the hell I didn’t hear my wake up alarm. I hop around on one foot trying to tie my shoe before switching to the other.

“Halle, hurry we’re going to be late,” Natalie calls from downstairs.

  “Okay, I’m coming.”

I get my other shoe tied, grab my books and rush down the stairs. Natalie is waiting at the bottom, tapping her watch.

  “I know, I know. Let’s go.”

We scramble out the door to Natalie’s car and rush off to school.

“So what class do you have this term?”

  “Abnormal Psych…”

“With Professor Harlow?” Natalie asks excitedly.

  “Uhm… yea… why?”

“He’s only the hottest professor in the entire school.”

I roll my eyes at her. “I could care less how hot he is. I just want to pass this class and start my career.”

She laughs, “That’s what you say now. Just wait. I promise once you see him, you’ll change your mind.”

Natalie whips into her parking spot and I quickly jump out of the car.

“See you later Nat, love you!”

“Love you too! Have fun in class!”

I ignore her last comment as I make a mad dash to class and make it just in time. I stop in the hallway to get myself together before I walk in. I make my way down the first row of desks and take a seat in the back away from everyone else. I don’t need any distractions from other students trying to talk and make friends. Not when this is my last class and I desperately need to pass it with the best grade possible. Once I get settled in my desk, I look up for the first time since entering and immediately make eye contact with Mister Jaksen Harlow. I suck in a breath as his eyes narrow, focusing in on me. Nat was not exaggerating; Jaksen Harlow is sinfully sexy. He’s tall and muscular, light brown hair, and crystal blue eyes. I try to look away but I can’t, especially not when his attention is fixated on me. Something screams danger yet something in his eyes is alluring.

I suddenly have no idea how I’m going to make it through this class.

  Fuck. Me.

  Chapter Two

  Halle

I bolt out of my seat the minute he dismisses class. Finally making it outside, I inhale a deep breath of fresh air, letting it fill my lungs before releasing it in a whoos
h. This class isn’t going to be as easy as I thought it would be if today is anything to go by. Concentrating on anything other than his blue eyes was impossible. It was his voice that got to me though; a deep bass that seemed to stroke over my nerve endings.

Shaking myself out of my thoughts I start walking across campus. Nat usually would pick me up but she is studying with a friend after class. I almost made it the end of the block when I hear the throaty growl of a blacked out Viper. The window slowly rolls down and Mr. Harlow peeks out at me.

  “Halle, Right?”

  “Yea.”

  “Do you need a ride?”

Turning and looking up the street I contemplate the idea. It is hotter than hell out and three miles to my apartment. I turn my attention back to him and he gives me a wicked grin that damn near makes my panties disintegrate.

“No, I’m okay. I don’t live that far, but thank you.”

  “Are you sure?”

  “Yea, I’m sure.”

“Okay. Have a good day, Halle. See you in class tomorrow.”

  “See you tomorrow.”

The window slowly rolls up and he takes off down the street. I suck in a deep breath, needing the oxygen to fill my lungs. Seems like I tend to do that a lot with him around. Continuing down the sidewalk, I feel like there is someone watching me. I pick up my pace and it isn’t until I am standing in front of my building that I look over my shoulder to see the very same car he was driving. I enter my code into the building security system, quickly pulling the door open as I do. Just as the door is about close, I hear the squeal of his tires driving off.

Bypassing the elevator all together, I make my way up the short flight of stairs to the apartment. Walking in I’m glad that Nat is studying because the last thing I need right now is a thousand and one questions about him. Throwing my bag on the couch I head to the kitchen to grab something to eat. Opening the fridge, I realize Nat and I desperately need to go grocery shopping. Closing the fridge, I open the cabinet next to it and settle on a pack of sandwich crackers. I collapse onto the couch next to my bag and begin flipping through the channels, putting on some cheesy ass reality tv. I make myself comfortable and, before I know it, I fall asleep.

I’m startled awake to the sound of Nat coming in the door calling my name.

  “Haaaalleeee.”

  “What?” I ask sleepily.

  “There’s something here for you.”

I pull myself up off the couch and walk over to where Natalie is trying to juggle everything. I help her empty her arms and she hands me a bouquet of deep purple colored roses and a note.

  “Who are they from?”

  “I don’t know yet but there’s a note card.”

“Well open it!” Nat says excitedly.

I slowly open the card and read the note inside.

  Tomorrow - J.

As soon as I read the note, I know who they’re from even though he only signed with an initial. Why the hell would he send me flowers? And why the hell did he follow me home? My head is swirling with questions but I can’t ask them at school. If someone overheard it could cost him his job and I could possibly lose my degree. All I know is, I can’t tell Nat who they’re from. She will freak and ask a million questions that I don’t have the answers to.

  “Who’s J?”

  “I-I don’t know,” I lie.

“Oh, a secret admirer! That’s exciting.”

  “And creepy,” I retort.

Nat side eyes me but I ignore her. She starts to ramble about this snooty girl that is in her study group but I zone out. My mind is too focused on why Jaksen, I mean Professor Harlow, would send me flowers. Thank God Nat is studying again tomorrow and I’ll have to walk home. Maybe he’ll ask if I want a ride again so that I can get some answers.

  Chapter Three

  Jaksen

This girl has me in knots. It has been a week since I left those flowers on her doorstep and nothing. She watches me all during class but never does anything. Several times I have noticed she seems to want to say something before she always chickens out. I’m done waiting for her to come to me; tonight my plan is in motion. The bell rings signaling the end of class. Now is my chance.

“Halle? Will you please stay after class for a few minutes? I’d like to talk to you.”

She hesitates for a moment before she answers. “Yea, sure.”

I wait impatiently as the rest of the class files out of the classroom. Halle sits at her desk, nervously biting her lip. I take one last glance around the hallway before shutting the door and pulling the blind down over the window. Walking over to my desk, I lean against it, arms crossed over my chest just watching her for a moment. She squirms in her seat under my gaze.

  “Did you get the flowers?”

“Yes. Thank you,” she answers quietly.

  “You’re welcome.”

She looks up, making direct eye contact with me for the first time since class was dismissed.

  “But, why?”

  “I find you intriguing.”

“And why did you follow me home last week?”

“To make sure you got there safely. We all know, Philadelphia is a rough city.”

“I’m a big girl, I can handle myself,” she snips.

I raise an eyebrow at her, “Noted.”

Her sassy mouth makes me want her even more. Fuck. I need to convince her to see me outside of here. Somewhere we can really talk without the chance of anyone hearing us.

“I really should be going.” She stands from her desk and heads for the door.

“Wait.” I move to stop her and she nearly runs into me.

We’re so close I can feel her warm breath on my face and smell the sweet floral scent of her perfume. It takes everything in me not to push her up against that wall behind her and make her mine. But here is not the place. I bring my hand up to caress her face; her breathing accelerates and she bites her lip again. Unable to resist any longer, I grab her, pushing her up against the wall and crush my lips to hers. She doesn’t resist as she threads her fingers in my hair. I hear someone in the hallway and step back, leaving us both breathless.

  “Have dinner with me.”

  “I’m not sure that’s a good idea.”

“We’re officially past anything that can be considered a good idea. I’ll pick you up at your place in an hour.”

  “But my roommate-”

“Your roommate is with her study group until 8.”

“How did you… nevermind. Fine. I’ll have dinner with you.”

  “Good. I’ll see you soon.”

I step back, opening the door for her and watch as she disappears through the doors at the end of the hallway.

  Halle

Smoothing my hands down the front of my skirt, I take one more glance at the clock. I can’t believe I agreed to dinner with him. That kiss really threw me off. Even though I know I should have said no, I just couldn’t. It doesn’t help that I’m ready nearly twenty minutes before he’s supposed to be here. It just gave the butterflies in my stomach a longer chance to take up residence.

This is just all around a bad idea. He’s my teacher for fucks sake, what am I thinking? That kiss though. I can still feel the warmth from his lips on mine; which is insane. When he gets here, I’ll just tell him I changed my mind and I won’t have dinner with him. Walking towards my room I reach up and pull my hair from the bun I had placed it in, allowing it to tumble down my back before just meeting my ass. Reaching behind me I pull the zipper down on my skirt before letting it fall to the floor. Stepping over my skirt, I pull my blouse over my head before bending to retrieve the skirt. Walking into my room I throw them in the corner before taking a simple pair of grey yoga pants and slipping them on. Rifling through my drawers, I find my brothers old NAVY t-shirt that is four sizes too big and slip it over my head. Looking in the mirror over my dresser I am satisfied that he won’t want to have dinner with me now.

Making my way back into my living room, I hear a knoc
k at the door. Walking to my door, I place my hand on the knob and take a deep breath before peeking out the peephole. Swinging the door open I hear the sharp inhalation of his breath before he’s there invading my space. My senses are the next to go when his mouth meets my own. It isn’t an easy kiss either. Instead it is a dueling of tongues and clashing teeth. Pulling away from him, I scramble out of his reach.

“No. I can’t do this. It’s unethical. You’re my professor for christ sakes.”

“And? We’re two consenting adults, Halle, and I know you want me as much as I want you.”

He steps inside my apartment and closes the door behind him. I walk to the kitchen, trying to put some space between us. Swinging the fridge open, I grab a bottle of water and when I close the fridge he’s standing right there. He reaches out and gently takes the bottle from my hand. He places it on the counter then grabs me by my hips and lifts me. My legs instinctively wrap around him as he carries me across the kitchen and sets me on the other counter so we’re eye to eye.
